Milk porridge is an essential part of the infant's diet, which provides a variety of valuable nutrients from milk and cereals. High calorie content Milk porridge creates a long feeling of fullness by reducing the gaps between meals. The child's first acquaintance with cereals begins with porridge cooked in water, and only if it is well tolerated does it come to speak of milk porridge made from similar cereals.
In order to figure out when it is possible to give milk porridge, it is necessary to turn to what is meant by this seemingly simple name. In the traditional sense, milk porridge refers most often to porridge cooked with cow's milk. When it comes to porridge for an infant, it can be porridge cooked in breast milk, artificial mixture and dry or liquid milk porridge for baby food that does not require cooking. All these cereals can be completely differently perceived by the child's body, therefore the answer to the question about the timing of their introduction is ambiguous and depends on the composition.
Homemade porridge made from any gluten-free cereals or dairy-free hypoallergenic porridge of industrial production on breast milk or artificial formula that a child receives is the safest, since the possibility of food allergies is minimized. Such milk porridge can be given as soon as the child gets used to porridge in water from one type of gluten-free cereal recommended for the first feeding (buckwheat, rice, corn). For example, if a week has passed since the beginning of feeding with buckwheat porridge, the child has taken it well, then you can try to give him buckwheat porridge in breast milk or formula. The optimal age is considered to be the age of seven months. Homemade cereals at the beginning of complementary feeding must be prepared using a mixture of milk and water, and by about eight months of age, you can refuse to dilute milk with water.
Along with the mother's desire, there are also well-founded reasons for the earlier introduction of milk porridge:
The need to buy milk porridge for baby food is controversial. After all, you can always buy or prepare dairy-free porridge with the addition of breast milk or an artificial mixture to which the baby is accustomed. On the other hand, the choice is usually small and there is always a temptation to buy milk porridge with a variety of cereal and fruit composition, in order not only to please the baby with a new taste, but also to facilitate the efforts to prepare it. By and large, if a child receives breast milk or an artificial formula, eats dairy-free cereals well, there is no need for purchased milk cereals.
The preparation of these cereals is carried out only on water, since milk (cow or goat and products based on them) has already been added by the manufacturer. The timing of the introduction of such cereals largely depends not only on the type of cereal, but also on the type of dairy product in its composition. These can be:
In addition to milk, cream is sometimes added to the porridge, which additionally increases its calorie content.
Vegetable fats are added to cereals based on an adapted mixture, including palm oil as a source of palmitic acid. If whole milk or standardized milk is used, no vegetable fats are added.
Milk porridge can be additionally sweetened by adding sugars. The addition of honey, sugar, glucose and fructose to milk porridge is limited and, according to the recommendations of the European Nutrition Committee, should not exceed 5 g / 100 calories for sugar, honey and glucose, and 2.5 g / 100 kcal for fructose.
For the rest, milk porridges differ little from dairy-free cereals. Almost all of them are enriched with additional supplements of vitamins and minerals necessary for the child. Many cereals contain the addition of probiotics (beneficial microorganisms) and prebiotics (dietary fiber), which normalize the intestinal microflora.
According to the degree of readiness for use, milk porridge can be dry, requiring dilution with water or ready-made liquid. In addition to the traditional milk cereals, there are variations of them.
Welling is a special kind of very liquid porridge - the traditional name for the Swedish product of the Semper trade mark, made from a mixture of grain and milk intended for bottle feeding. Similar products from other manufacturers are also called porridge. Most often, wellings are recommended for evening and morning feedings. They are made on the basis of dairy products (skimmed milk powder, whey, cream) with the addition of vegetable oils, starch, minerals and vitamins.
Another type of ready-made milk porridge is a product consisting of a mixture of fruit purees, cereals (biscuits), milk and additives of honey, chocolate and other additives, also called desserts ("hipp").
It is understood that whole cow's milk means dry milk that has not undergone any changes. It differs from standardized milk. In the latter, the fat content is brought to a predetermined level. Whole and normalized milk contains quite a lot of minerals, which unnecessarily loads the child's excretory system, and the set of its proteins is significantly different from breast milk. Among these proteins, there are also allergenic proteins, and therefore cereals with whole or normalized milk are not suitable for the first feeding with milk cereals. Such cereals should be approached very carefully, it is better to postpone their intake until the child is 8-9 months old, and if necessary, give preference to porridge for baby food on an adapted mixture. As for goat's milk, in some respects it is closer to breast milk than cow's milk, but it still needs additional adaptation to the needs of the child.
Attention! Despite the fact that whole cow or goat milk is allowed to be consumed as part of cereals for children under one year old, it is not recommended to give a child any milk other than pure breast milk.
The timing of the introduction of homemade cereals is similar to the timing of the introduction of cereals for baby food with whole milk.

If the manufacturer adds skimmed cow's milk to the milk porridge (with almost no milk fat), then vegetable fats are additionally included in the composition, which contain polyunsaturated fatty acids that are useful for the proper growth and development of the child. That is, the porridge becomes fat-adapted. Nevertheless, it retains almost the full spectrum of milk proteins and is not very suitable for the first feeding with milk porridge.

After the introduction of vegetable complementary foods, at the age of about 6 months, cereals may already appear in the child's diet. From the moment they are entered into the menu, they become one of the most important sources of nutrients for a growing body: proteins, fats, carbohydrates, fiber. The first cereals for the baby are boiled in water, milk mixtures or breast milk, you can add cow's milk (preferably ultra-pasteurized) and cream only when the child reaches one year of age. Introducing porridge, like any new food, is worth starting with one spoon and gradually increasing the portion. From the age of one, when the child already has enough teeth, he can calmly eat almost any cereal porridge cooked in milk.
Of course, you can always buy ready-made cereals of industrial production, which are offered in abundance by modern shops and pharmacies. However, homemade cereals have a number of fairly significant advantages:
You know for sure that the groats have not undergone any preliminary treatments;
Are you sure that there is no sugar in the porridge, which is not at all useful for the baby's delicate body;
Seasonal vegetables and fruits in cereals will enrich the child's body with fresh natural vitamins.
In addition, there are times when the baby categorically refuses to eat any brand of store cereals. Then, willy-nilly, mother will have to carry out culinary experiments herself, until she has a porridge of optimal taste and composition, which completely satisfies the wishes of a tiny gourmet.
For cooking milk porridge for a child from one year old, you can use cow's or goat's milk. Milk obtained in the dairy kitchen, as well as store-bought ultra-pasteurized or sterilized milk, need not be boiled, but pasteurized milk must be boiled for two to three minutes. It is impossible to process it longer, otherwise all useful substances will be destroyed in it.
Cereals suitable for cooking porridge for a baby are, first of all, and. It will also be useful, but it must be processed in a special way - gluten, which can cause allergies, is removed from corn intended for baby food. After these types of cereals, you can enter semolina, millet, barley and pearl barley porridge.
Before cooking, any cereals, except for semolina and corn, must be sorted out. Buckwheat, pearl barley, millet, barley groats and rice will also need to be washed. To make the porridge have a more pleasant aroma and cook faster, heat the cereal before cooking in a frying pan without oil. So that the milk does not lose its benefits due to prolonged processing, but the porridge could be boiled down enough, you should first boil it in water or diluted milk until the cereal absorbs all the liquid, and only then dilute with hot milk, boil and remove from heat.
So that the baby does not get bored of the bored taste, we advise you to offer him a new porridge every day of the week. An excellent option for starting the week would be, for example. Use Hercules flakes for cooking - this is already a well-established quality standard. To make the porridge more tender and easy to digest, grind the flakes with a coffee grinder. Add butter and sweeteners (if you think this is required) after boiling, when the porridge has cooled slightly. It is worth noting that it is better to sweeten porridge for children not with sugar, but with Jerusalem artichoke syrup, maple syrup, honey, and best of all with fruits and berries. Oatmeal with chopped banana is especially tasty. If the baby doesn't even like such porridge, you can whip it in a blender - the resulting delicate cream will certainly be eaten in the blink of an eye.
The next day, cook the child a delicious and healthy buckwheat... Use a high-quality kernel, crushed in a coffee grinder: first, boil it in water until thick, and then dilute it with milk, boil and season with butter. You can cook and.
Suitable for Wednesday menu millet porridge... You can cook it in baked milk - thanks to this, it will come out softer and sweeter. Cook it to a semi-liquid consistency, and at the end of cooking add butter or cream and fresh fruit. You can also cook it: it is very useful and absolutely all children like it.
Thursday is time for tender rice porridge. It is also best to grind rice grains before cooking this porridge using a blender and a coffee grinder. You can cook any kind of rice porridge, from round to brown. When cooking, it is good to add fruits to it: apples, bananas or pears. will help you save time and effort.
For Friday breakfast or lunch, cook barley for your child. Barley porridge is quite difficult to digest, but it is very useful for children, especially those suffering from stomach problems or overweight. To cook barley porridge for a child, you must first soak the cereal for about 12 hours, and then cook it for three to six hours in a water bath. You can add cream or butter and dried fruits soaked in water to the finished barley.
On Saturday you can offer your baby an unusual surprise - porridge with coconut milk. It is best to cook semolina or oatmeal like this. Coconut milk should be mixed with water and brought to a boil over medium heat. After that, slowly add the cereal, cook the porridge for about 5 minutes, let it brew for another 10 minutes, and then serve sweetened with syrup, fruit puree or fresh fruit.
Sunday is the time to pamper your child with sweet corn porridge! You can boil wholemeal porridge (this will take about an hour) or grind it in a coffee grinder (then you will need a little over half an hour). If the porridge turns out to be lumpy, rub it through a sieve.
With the standard scheme for introducing complementary foods, the next step after vegetables to introduce the baby to food from the common table is porridge. They are nutritious, rich in valuable substances and "long-playing" carbohydrates, which will provide the baby with energy for learning about the world around him during the day and a calm and long sleep at night. A child under one year old must first enter cereal, and then cereal dairy-free baby cereals. Ready dish diluted with the usual mixture or breast milk.
The introduction of monocomponent cereal dairy-free cereals (oatmeal, millet, barley, semolina) can be started from 9 months, but most children's nutritionists are still inclined to the position that is better after a year. Recent studies show that the child's gastrointestinal tract begins to produce an enzyme that is capable of breaking down gluten only from 2-2.5 years of age.
It is recommended to start with dairy-free cereals as the first complementary food for babies with poor weight gain and frequent stools. The most appropriate reason to start feeding with this dish is viral diarrhea and the diagnosis "malnutrition", in which the baby lags behind in weight.
Only 4-7 weeks after the start of the introduction of dairy-free cereals, it is possible to acquaint the crumbs with one-component dairy, but only for the conditions that the appearance of the first in the diet of the child suffered without negative reactions.
Buy ready-made baby porridge or cook it yourself with "adult" cereal - no difference, it all depends on the mother's free time. From the point of view of convenience, at first, it is preferable to start acquaintance with cereals with one-component "packaging" options. In addition, they are hypoallergenic, have a structure appropriate for the age of the child, and are quick to prepare.
It is best to start complementary foods with buckwheat or rice. Study the packaging carefully and make sure once again that it is not in milk, and also does not have any flavoring additives - sugar, salt, flavorings, etc.
Babies suffering from constipation need the introduction of cereals, rich in dietary fiber, into the diet. These include buckwheat and baby corn.
For babies with unstable stools, it would be reasonable to give rice porridge, practically avoiding buckwheat and oatmeal.
Children with any form of food allergy and atopic dermatitis should not be fed dairy and gluten products for up to a year.
(1) Dairy-free gluten-free → (2) Dairy-free gluten-free → (3) Dairy-free gluten-free → (4) Dairy-free gluten.
After 8-9 months, finely chopped fruits or dried fruits, berries can be added to cereal or cereal dishes in small quantities.
From 10 months, porridge can be cooked in diluted 1: 1 goat milk (after it has been introduced into the diet), and from 12 months - in diluted 1: 1 cow's milk (also after successful introduction).
The ideal time is lunch. If porridge is the first complementary food, then they start with half a teaspoon, and each new day the volume is increased. Until the amount of porridge reaches the age norm (50-100 g at 6 months and 100-150 g at 7 months), the child is breastfed. In principle, if the mother of the GV is not going to roll up yet, the breast can still be offered.
If porridge is the second complementary food, after vegetables or sour milk, it is still given in the morning. Porridge is offered before vegetable puree or mixed with it. The introduction scheme remains the same: first half a teaspoon, then a whole one, then 2 spoons, and until the new food "pushes" vegetables from breakfast. At this very time, the displaced vegetable puree is fed to the child in one of the afternoon meals, allowing him to "fill up" with breast / mixture.
In the case of using a special porridge for baby food, it is bred according to the instructions. If a mother prepares complementary foods from ordinary cereals, then you need to adhere to a special recipe. You will need to cook a 5% porridge - at the rate of 5 g of cereal per 100 water. The child is fed with such a thin porridge for about 7 days, until they are convinced of the absence of any negative reactions and bring it to the age volume. Then the dish is prepared thicker - at the rate of 10 g of cereal per 100 g of water, and again 5-7 days are taken for the child to get used to it. Only after two weeks can you start introducing a new cereal.
Important! You can not give the baby porridge from a bottle - only from a spoon. It is necessary that in the oral cavity it undergoes a preliminary enzymatic treatment with saliva, namely its components - amylase and lysozyme. These enzymes help the food break down into molecular-sized substances in the stomach.
R - rice
G - buckwheat
K - corn
C - butter
It is also worth noting that the age at which the manufacturer "permits" to feed the child with cereals is almost always less than the one recommended by the WHO. Remember, when it comes to dating crumbs with "adult" food, "later" and "slower" are always better than "earlier" and "faster".

1. It is worth avoiding purchases of baby food in questionable shops or on the market - storage conditions may not be respected.
2. The packaging, especially the inner one, must not be damaged. If you overlooked and bought such porridge - throw it away without regret: the child's health is more important than any money.
3. Observe storage conditions - in a dry and dark place, without fragrant "neighbors". If the inner bag does not have a special fastener, close it with a clothespin.
4. Most cereals cannot be cooked or hall boil with boiling water - only with warm boiled water.
5. It is forbidden to give the child porridge,the specified period after the opening of which has expired - there is a risk of infection of cereals with moths or microorganisms.
6. It is forbidden to leave "for later" already diluted porridge that the child has not finished - just throw it away.
Milk porridge is a traditional and healthy dish for a child's diet, but it is better to cook the first portion of porridge for a baby in water. After checking the body's reaction to the selected cereal and making sure that it is positive, mom can start cooking dishes in milk. It turns out that it is high in calories and has a high nutritional value. Most children love milk porridge and eat it with pleasure.
Most toddlers are happy to eat milk porridge.A question to which there is no single answer. For many housewives, the "milk porridge" dish involves the use of a certain type of cereal and milk. We often cook rice, oatmeal, millet groats, and not only for children. Cooking such a dish for babies is significantly different from the usual recipe.
You can cook the groats yourself or use a ready-made mixture. Stores offer a wide variety of non-boiled baby cereals. A variety of methods, of course, pleases, but we must not forget about the characteristics of the body of a small child.
The timing of the introduction of a new product in the baby's menu depends on its composition and the baby's reaction to the new food. Some babies are ready to eat porridge as early as six months, others eat only mother's milk for up to a year.
Dear reader!
This article tells about typical ways of solving your questions, but each case is unique! If you want to know how to solve your particular problem - ask your question. It's fast and free!
Let's start our conversation with ready-made baby food products that go to our counters. Today, unique recipes have been developed for gluten-free and dairy-free hypoallergenic cereals. They are based on breast milk and formula, due to which the risk of food allergies in the baby is minimized. Pediatricians believe that milk porridge with such properties is ideal for feeding babies as a complementary food.
If your baby has already tried cereals boiled in water and is used to it, you can introduce milk porridge with gluten-free (buckwheat, corn, rice) cereals into his diet.
If the baby likes the porridge on the water, you can switch to gluten-free milk porridgeFor example, your baby is happy to eat buckwheat in water, which means it's time to give him a taste of the same, but with a mixture of milk + water 1: 1. Doctors believe that when breastfeeding, this type of complementary feeding can be introduced from 8 months.
Let's clarify a little nuance: first, prepare a dish in water. Approaching the age of 8 months, you can partially eliminate water and cook a milk dish (using special baby milk).
Early complementary feeding can be due to other reasons that do not depend on the wishes of the nursing mother. Porridge is added to the baby's diet if:
- little breast milk is produced;
- the child does not gain weight well;
- revealed a lack of B vitamins;
- there are reasons why it is impossible to feed the baby with breast milk or formula.
Ready-made milk porridge for baby food
To buy or not to buy a ready-made baby food product is a justifiably controversial choice. Ready-made, not requiring long cooking, balanced porridge helps the mother to introduce the child to the new product and provide him with a complete complementary food. Manufacturers are sophisticated in culinary delights, and on the shelves we see compositions with fruits and cereals, berries and vegetables. There is a temptation to buy such a dish and not bother with home cooking. However, if you are breastfeeding your baby or with a formula, feeding him with cereals boiled in water, there is no need to take the product from the store.
If the baby is breastfed, porridge can also be prepared for him on his own.It should be borne in mind that cereals from the store, which include milk (cow or goat), are boiled in water. The time when they can be used as complementary foods is determined by the type of milk from which they are made (more in the article:). The methods of their use are different and are indicated on the product packaging. Producers also produce liquid types of products, and those that should be diluted with water, and in a dry version.
Features of cereals from whole and normalized milk
Let's understand the features of both types of milk. Whole milk is the dry version of unaltered cow's milk. In the manufacture of a normalized form, they resort to bringing its fat content to a certain level necessary for the child's body.
Both types are saturated with mineral elements that can overload the excretory system of the crumbs. The protein content deviates from the indicators of breast milk, they also contain allergenic proteins, and therefore pediatricians do not advise using cereals with such types of milk for starting complementary foods.
Such products are suitable for feeding 8-9 month old babies. If, before this age, the baby's digestion reacted negatively to new dishes, replace it with others made from a simplified mixture.
The composition of goat's milk is better correlated with the composition of the mother's, but it takes time for the child's body to adapt to assimilate it. If there is no lactose intolerance, you can get by with regular cow's milk.
Home-cooked and commercially produced porridges are introduced at the same age.
If the baby is healthy and normally assimilates the cow's product, there is no need to switch to goat's milkSince the assortment is large, we studied the properties of the products of the most popular brands that manufacture their products with whole milk and normalized milk. Our detailed review will help you make a smart purchase and make the right choice for your baby. Pay special attention to the composition, at what age you can start using it, correlate it with your needs.

One of the most beloved and popular breakfast dishes is milk porridge. This dish perfectly saturates the body and gives a charge of energy for the whole day, but how could it be otherwise, because cereals are a source of energy, and milk is a wonderful source of protein and vitamins. Both ingredients are very beneficial to health.
Usually, porridge with a viscous consistency is cooked in milk, so a little more liquid is needed to prepare them than for the rest. Each cereal has its own characteristics and individual cooking secrets, but there are general rules for everyone:
- Anything, except semolina and oatmeal, is washed before cooking;
- Grains are poured into a boiling liquid;
- Porridge with milk is salted a little more than porridge with water;
- In the process of cooking, milk is first salted, and only then cereals are poured;
- Some cereals are first cooked in water, and then cooked in milk;
- Any porridge after cooking should evaporate a little. The porridge is evaporated exactly as long as it was cooked on the fire.
Recipes for making different cereals in milk
Millet
Before you start cooking, the millet is thoroughly washed with warm water, rubbing the cereal in the palms for better cleansing, about seven times. The last time it is recommended to pour boiling water over the cereal, this will help get rid of the excess bitterness that may be present in it. After washing, the millet is filled with a large volume of hot water and sent to the stove. The porridge is cooked to a semi-ready state, it takes about ten minutes, then the water is drained and the cereal is poured with hot milk. For one glass of dry millet, about a glass of milk is taken. The porridge with milk is again put on the fire, covered with a lid and boiled. When the cereal has completely absorbed the milk, you can turn off and enjoy a delicious dish.
Semolina
The most important thing to remember about semolina is not exactly cereal, it is their flour hard grade coarse wheat. It is very simple to prepare, it boils down quickly, but there are some subtleties in cooking: it is cooked quickly and precisely in proportions.
To prepare semolina in milk you will need:
One and a half glasses of semolina;
A liter of milk.
Preparation:
The groats are poured into boiled milk through a sieve, this avoids churning the cereals into lumps. Cook the porridge over high heat for two minutes, stirring all the time, then cover with a lid, turn off the heat and let it brew for 10-15 minutes. Porridge must definitely stand on the switched off burner, so it acquires all its taste. After insisting, it is not necessary to interfere, the porridge can be sprinkled on plates and allowed to stand, it will harden, after which it can be cut into pieces and eaten with a fork, if you are a fan of cold porridges.
Do not worry if after two minutes of cooking it has not become thick, it will stand, steam, the grains will swell, and it will become the desired consistency. At the end, you can put a little in the porridge butter, grind with sugar, or add a little jam.
Oatmeal
To prepare porridge, oatmeal or oatmeal is taken. To begin with, they are boiled in hot water, then rubbed through a sieve to get rid of the husk and other hard parts. For cooking, take 2 parts of water and one part of flakes. Then the porridge wiped through a sieve is poured with milk, again in proportions of 2: 1, if you want a very thin porridge, you can take even more milk. Cook for about seven minutes and set aside. Insist for about five minutes, add sugar, honey or jam to taste. You can also put a little chocolate, dried fruits in the porridge, spices are well combined: cardamom, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg. You can decorate the porridge with citrus zest, which will also give an unusual taste and be sure to put a little oil. If you want to make the porridge very tender, you should add cream.

As you know, rice is very hard to boil in a milky environment, so first it is boiled in water. Before cooking, the rice is thoroughly washed with water several times to wash away dust and debris, then sent to boiling water and boiled for five minutes. After the time has elapsed, they are sent to a colander and the water is allowed to drain well. After that, the rice porridge is poured into boiling milk. For one glass of rice cereal, take four glasses of milk, in proportions it is worth repelling the consistency of porridge from personal preferences. Rice in milk is brought to a boil, the fire is made quieter and boiled for ten minutes under a closed lid. Then turn off the fire and let it brew for another fifteen minutes. To maintain the temperature, you can wrap the pot with a towel.
